AmeriCorps In Lewistown

Lewistown Receives Much Support From AmeriCorps

January 12, 2004 -- You may not have known it, but Lewistown currently has four AmeriCorps members serving locally, and at least one AmeriCorps VISTA alumni. First, a description of what AmeriCorps is. AmeriCorps is a government-sponsored program that helps nonprofits or other tax-exempt organizations connect with individuals who are interested in serving their country and their fellow Americans through a year of service. For this service, AmeriCorps individuals receive a living stipend and access to an additional cash stipend or education award at the end of their term of service. AmeriCorps individuals can serve anywhere in the United States. There are many AmeriCorps programs, including AmeriCorps Technology Corps, and AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America).

Current AmeriCorps members in Lewistown are:

Alice Edwards, Fergus County Disaster and Emergency Services
AmeriCorps VISTA for Homeland Security
(Started July 2003)

Jo Ann Rae, Central Montana Youth Mentoring Program
AmeriCorps VISTA for ???
(Started January 2003 -- extended for an additional 6 months)

Jonny ?, Boys and Girls Club
AmeriCorps Technology Corps
(Started August 2003)???

K??, Boys and Girls Club
AmeriCorps VISTA for ???
(Will start her VISTA year late January)

Jennifer Pfau, the director for the Boys and Girls club, is a VISTA alumni. She first began working at the Boys and Girls club as a VISTA position in ____, during which time she began fundraising for the program. She began working as the director in _____.

For a small town, this is a great number of AmeriCorps members and we can look forward to the assistance they will be to the community through their sponsoring organizations. Lewistown should be proud that these individuals have chosen to serve in Lewistown. Montana, total, has only ______ out of the approximately _____ AmeriCorps members who are currently serving, and to have this many in Lewistown is a great coup for the city.

If you are interested in service opportunities through AmeriCorps, or are interested in applying for an AmeriCorps member to serve at your organization, please contact Jeremy Martin ______ ?
