Volunteers are the lifeblood of emergency management. Many of our Fire, EMS, and Law Enforcement personnel are volunteer and on call year-round.

Disaster and Emergency Services assists these agencies in various ways, including assisting with incident command during larger events, operating the Emergency Operations Center and coordinating and activating the Emergency Operations Plan, and organizing supplies for emergency personnel.

During Disasters

The Disaster and Emergency Services needs volunteers willing to fill the following roles during emergencies where the Emergency Operations Center is activated:

  • EOC manager
  • Runners -- hand deliver messages, pick-up or drop-off items
  • Resource Person -- track, acquire, and dispatch requested resources
  • Message Recorder -- records messages. answers phones, and provides documentation
  • Statistics Recorders -- research and update status of incident information

Day to Day Operations

The DES office also needs volunteers to assist with day-to-day operations on a year-round basis. These needs include:

  • Grant writing
  • General office assistance (data entry, filing, cleanup)
  • Web site maintenance
  • Newsletter coordinator and editor
  • Community education and emergency management teachers (training available)
  • Weather spotters
  • Food Support: Baking or beverages for monthly LEPC meetings and other events
  • Special Project Assistance (help with fundraising such as raffles, and office assistance, occasional assistance associated with these events)

Volunteer through the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program

We are currently working with community volunteers and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) to encourage senior citizens in our community to use their skills and experience for the community. Please contact RSVP if you are a senior and are interested in the benefits available when you volunteer, which can include meal tickets, insurance, and more.

If you are interested in volunteering, even if your particular volunteer skill or ability is not listed above, please contact us! We would love to hear from you!
